29/11/2014· Pitch is produced via the distillation of carbon-based materials, such as plants, crude oil, and coal. Pitch is isotropic, but can be made anisotropic through the use of heat treatments. However, the most important in carbon fiber production is mesophase pitch due to the ability to melt spin anisotropic mesophase pitch without filament breakage.
01/07/2020· Carbon fibres have been manufactured using isotropic and mesophase pitch. Isotropic pitch will result in general-purpose low strength/stiffness carbon fibres, while the mesophase pitch (made by polymerising isotropic pitch) is used to create more useful, stronger and stiffer carbon fibres.

01/11/2016· The main precursor fibers used to manufacture carbon fibers are polyacrylonitrile (PAN), petroleum/coal pitch and synthetic cellulosic fibers (for example, rayon). The precursor material for CF is of major importance because it dictates the fiber properties, as well as how the fiber behaves mechanically, physically and chemically.
Pitch-based carbon fibers have to be divided into two classes, isotropic-pitch-based and anisotropic mesophase-pitch-based. These two carbon fibers are different not only in precursor but also in their structure, nanotexture and properties. The production processes for these two fibers are shown in Fig. 3.94.

14/01/2020· Carbon fiber is made from organic polymers, which consist of long strings of molecules held together by carbon atoms. Most carbon fibers (about 90%) are made from the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) process. A small amount (about 10%) are manufactured from rayon or the petroleum pitch process.

Mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers are an attractive precursor candidate for carbon fibers because of the high availability of low-cost raw pitch. There are several reasons why the mesophase pitch process should produce a lower cost, high-performance fiber. First, the starting material (petroleum or coat-tar pitch) costs 40-50 percent less than the monomers used to form PAN. Second, because

Pitch products are produced by Rain Carbon Inc. from coal tar pitch (CTP), a derivative of coal tar distillation, as well as from specialty petroleum feedstocks. CTP is mainly used as a binder for the production of carbon anodes essential for aluminum smelting. An important variation of CTP also serves for impregnation of graphite electrodes employed by electric arc furnaces in steel
31/03/2020· The carbon fiber manufacturing process also is notoriously difficult and expensive. Tool-up of a single world-class production line is capital intensive — $25 million minimum for equipment alone — and can take up to two years to implement. In fact, the cost can be much more. Spinnable mesophase pitch precursor containing more than 98% mesophase content was successfully prepared from FCC-DO (fluid catalytic cracking-decant oil) without hydrogenation or catalytic reaction. The preparation method involved thermal condensation, vacuum treatment, and annealing treatment. Petroleum mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers are produced by melt spinning of pitch precursors
Mesophase pitch carbon fibers have a wide variety of internal structures, such as radial, random, onionskin and their intermediates. The internal structure is determined by the shear conditions in the spinneret and the dimensions of the die. To obtain proper structures and, as the result, high tensile properties, it is most important to control the spinning process since molecular orientation
Pitch Carbon fiber are produced from Pitch precursor as well. Production of carbon fiber is initiate by process known as polymerization, when pitch is heated at 300C, several carbon aromatic rings chain combines with Each other & generate stable sheet type 2-D structure which is known as misophase of pitch. This mesophase of pitch is now wrapped around spinner while passing through die the
